What is Blood Pressure? Symptoms, Causes, Prevention, Treatment, and Types of Blood Pressure

Updated: Jul 7, 2022

The arteries carry blood from the heart to other parts of our body. When the heart pumps blood through the arteries, the blood puts pressure on the artery walls, this is known as blood pressure. It is an important force because, it enables the blood to flow around the circulatory system, and provide oxygen and nutrients delivered through our arteries to our tissues and organs. It is also vital because it delivers white blood cells and antibodies for immunity and hormones such as insulin.

Blood pressure is measured using two numbers:

i) Systolic blood pressure; measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats.

ii) Diastolic blood pressure; measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats.

Blood pressure is written with the systolic blood pressure first, followed by the diastolic blood pressure (for example 120/80).

Types of blood pressure

Our blood pressure normally rises and falls throughout the day, the common parameters are;

A) Normal blood pressure

A normal blood pressure level is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80 mmHg. Once the levels start fluctuating, blood pressure either turns high or low.

B) High blood pressure

It often occurs when the individual follows an unhealthy lifestyle, practices smoking, drinking, is very overweight and does not exercise. If left untreated, it can lead to a number of serious long-term health conditions, such as coronary heart disease and kidney disease. It is considered to be above 140/90 and during severe conditions it ranges above 180/20mmHg.

C) Low blood pressure

Very less people suffer from it, some medicines can cause low blood pressure as a side effect. It can occur due to some health conditions like heart failure and dehydration. It is considered to be below 90/60mmHg.
