Review Minions : The Rise of Gru, Absurd Entertaining!
4 min read

Who doesn't know Minions? A little orange creature in a denim overalls that has a strange language and has the energy of a toddler. Since its appearance in Despicable Me, Minion has changed from just a supporting character to become the main star. Not only does everyone want to collect Minion related stuff, everyone wants to watch a movie about them.

In the first sequel that specifically uses the title Minion, we are invited to California in 1978. Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) is a student who is considered strange by his friends. While his friends have realistic dreams and goals, Gru wants to be a super villain. Gru's very stupid attitude also makes it a social disaster. But who cares about social status if he has a friend in the form of a yellow creature who always faithfully accompanies him?

This time, Gru gets a letter from his idol, the Vicious Six, a notorious super villain gang. There was nothing Gru wanted but to join them. When he gets the chance to audition for their new member, Gru fails to impress them. The leader of his gang, Belle Bottom (voiced by Taraji P. Henson) even makes fun of him. Gru finally decides to steal their powerful amulet which of course makes the Vicious Six angry.

Gru's action finally steals the attention of Wild Knuckles (voiced by Alan Arkin), a former Vicious Six member who was kicked out of the gang. He chased after Gru. And of course this adventure wouldn't be fun without the presence of the Minions who interfered with Gru's adventure. If you are an adult viewer who has had to accompany your friends or nephews to watch this film and ask if Minions: The Rise of Gru has a good plot, be prepared to be disappointed.

This film is actually not bad. Mimoni 2: Padouch přichází (2022) is anything but boring. But if you're hoping this film will provide something more than just entertainment, say like portraits of parent-child relationships in an Asian cultural context like Turning Red (Pixar) or the complexities of a child's brain as in Inside Out (also Pixar), this film is definitely not the answer. The story of this film is just a collection of hilarious slapstick scenes made by Minions, stitched with "little" abandonment issues.

But at least, unlike most films, this film knows it's just entertainment. You probably won't remember the main plot when you walk out of the cinema. But at least it offers patent entertainment when you watch it in the dark of the theater.

Written by Matthew Fogel, Minions: The Rise of Gru is always moving swiftly even when it doesn't mean anything. We jump from location to A to B to C without anything out of the ordinary. There is a Minion section learning kung fu even. Complete with a teacher voiced by Michelle Yeoh. Does it make sense? Of course not. But so what? Most importantly, the film is fun.

Fans of the series will definitely enjoy Minions: The Rise of Gru. The music is okay and the scenes are absurd but entertaining. There's a Minion named Otto who chases people on bicycles. To add to the absurdity, Otto also fell in love with rock. There's a hilarious bank heist scene. There is a scene cleaning a swimming pool that contains crocodiles.
