Updates to Our Brand Safety Controls and Intellectual Property Protection Tools

As part of our ongoing work to maintain a high-quality ecosystem of content for people and to provide advertisers with relevant tools to suit their business needs, today, we’re expanding our brand safety controls and making updates to our Commerce & Ads IP Tool.

Brand Safety Updates

We want to provide content rights holders with the opportunity to earn revenue from their content on our platform, even if it’s published by another page. Now through Rights Manager, copyright owners can opt to claim and collect ad earnings on copyrighted content that is published by pages that meet our Community Standards and our partner monetization policies, and their content meets our content monetization policies.

Expansion of this ability gives publishing pages the opportunity to use content owned by someone else in a video they upload without it being taken down, while also expanding inventory for advertisers and providing people with compelling content that might otherwise be blocked due to copyright issues. To provide transparency and ease-of-use to advertisers, we have built into this expansion a suitability control that allows advertisers to opt-out of delivering on claimed videos during the campaign creation flow.

In addition, we’re beginning to integrate publisher allow lists and inventory filters — two brand suitability controls — into the reach estimator in Ads Manager. This will aim to provide an estimate of reach when these controls are applied.

Empowering Brands with IP Protection Tools

Facebook is committed to helping businesses protect their intellectual property (IP) rights across our products and services, which includes combatting the sale and promotion of counterfeit goods. We have strict policies against counterfeit goods and IP infringement, and we take comprehensive measures to address these issues. These measures range from a robust notice-and-takedown program to investments in machine learning to take action on suspected counterfeits.

As part of these efforts, we are doubling down on our investment in tooling and partnering with businesses to protect their brands by launching enhancements to our Commerce & Ads IP Tool. The Commerce & Ads IP Tool is designed to empower businesses to easily identify and report infringing content. Businesses can apply to access this tool and enrolled businesses can search and monitor ads and commerce listings, such as ones on Marketplace and Shops. If they find content that infringes on their IP rights, they can report that content to us. Our IP Operations team works 24/7 to review reported content and remove it, typically within a day after we receive a report — and often much more quickly.

Today, we are launching the following improvements to this tool:

  1. Image search functionality: In addition to the ability to search for ads and commerce listings using text, we added the ability for businesses to search by uploading an image. This will display content that matches or is similar to the image uploaded.
  2. Expansion of search results: The tool will now display results from businesses selling on Shops and via Instagram posts with product tags.

Our goal is to ensure our platforms bring value to both people and businesses. We continue to increase our enforcement on the actors behind this activity and are committed to making our platforms better and safer. And while we know there is still more to be done, we will keep striving to help people and businesses use our platforms safely and successfully.
