Lake and Pond Aeration — Maintaining Oxygen Levels in Water

Lake and pond aeration systems help to circulate oxygen throughout a given body of water. They provide fish the oxygen they need and also help balance levels of dissolved oxygen and water temperature within the water body. Lake and Pond aeration systems also help prevent water stratification, which happens when water becomes stagnant, from occurring. Or is a more industrial style aerator with max aeration qualities what you re looking for? Typically, aerators are either surface-type aerators or the bottom-type aerators.

Surface-type aerators are those that work from the top and push oxygen downward into the pond so it can be distributed throughout the water. Surface aerators are generally more common and considered a good option for ponds that are no deeper than six to seven feet. When the depth of the pond is more than seven feet, however, you might need a bottom aerator. A bottom aerator is one that works in the opposite way; that is, it pushes the oxygen from the bottom of the water column, to the top. This type of aerator is best for ponds and lakes deeper than eight feet.

The need for aeration is nearly universal in ponds as they are smaller bodies of water that typically do not have enough natural circulation of their own to support much life, let alone a fish pond or water garden. However, any pond or lake — regardless of its size — will benefit from aeration. As such, they are highly recommended for those who are lucky enough to live on one and have the desire to keep their water body clean, healthy, and vibrant!
